Another day of my life has passed, another day spent with the company of orchids. I guess it is only today when I first heard of stories with regards to all the different breeds of orchids. Well, just some introduction, our national flower is Vanda Miss Joaquim "Agnes". There are a lot of Vanda Miss Joaquims, so don't get them wrong. The more common ones in the markets are Vanda Miss Joaquim "josephine". Each are a hybrid of the original vanda Joaquim found in the wild with any other kinds of orchids that you choose from. Those aith names with "ara" at the end are usually red. Our national flower is VMJ Agnes because it was the first cross breed in Singapore, and of of course, the person who cross-breeded it is Agnes Joaquim. All right, a little history. When Lee Kuan Yew first came into power in 19 i dunno what, what he first did to consolidate his power would be to send all the opposition party leaders overseas, as our ambassadors. It was a clever move and it left a lot of them disgruntled and discontend. But there was nothing they could do about it. One of the more prominent figure in this predicament would be David Marshall, a lawyer who was the man before LKY. He was sent to be Singapore's ambassador to Paris. That left him an unhappy man. He begged for a new orchid to be named after him and an orchid was really breeded in honour of him. This breed of orchid came to be the one normally found in wet markets where those aunties and uncles buy as offerings to their gods. Talk about short-lived happiness.
